In 1934 talented Germans - including Marlene Dietrich - have begun to flee the Third Reich. Yet Sara Potter, an American actress, has gone to Germany to star in what turns out to be a propaganda film. Why? Paramount boss, Adolph Zukor, sends detective Michael Temple to bring Potter home before she tarnishes her career. Althought the novel unfolds like a thriller and provides a who-done-it to unravel, at the heart of the story are national rivalries, Nazi rivalries, moral dilemmas, and family mysteries. From high society to the unwashed, and from Nazi bigwigs to their opponants, the book vividly portrays Berlin during the months Hitler solidified his hold on power. While questions about morality, duty, honor, and loyality abound, ask yourself this. How far would you go to save a loved one?  Chasing Dietrich was designated one of the Best Books of 2012 by Kirkus Reviews.

New author, Michael Mears, does a top-notch job in [[ASIN:1461181461 Chasing Dietrich]), a pre-WWII detective story! At a time when many are fleeing Germany, n aspiring American actress, Sara Potter goes to Germany for her big film break. While there, her U.S. studio boss becomes worried for her safety so he hires Michael Temple to go to Germany and bring her back. The plot twists and turns make this a real page-turner.

I disagree with the Kirkus Reviewer who called Sara Potter a "dame". She's much too complex and enchanting to be dismissed as a mere dame. Sara is a strong female character who's trying to make the best of things in a very frightening world. I found myself at times cheering her and alternately jeering. It wasn't until the very end that I came to understand her true character.

A good strong premise gone wrong.Too drawn out and conveluted for my taste. Some great detail and well researched.but doesn't quite fulfill its premise or promise
"Chasing Dietrich" is a good tale, well told. Set in '30s Berlin, the story contains elements of a noire murder mystery and an historical thriller. I am looking forward to more novels from this author.
I wouldn't have wanted to live in Nazi Germany but was fascinated by Mears' portrayal of the period. The characters, both real and fictional, come alive; in part through dialog that rings true, while the book's scenes roll in the mind's eye like a sharply edited film. Part who-done-it, part action-thriller, and part multi-generational family saga, Mears blends the elements and creates a tale with both a heart and a mind. I was hooked right to the end by the story and the quality of the writing.
"Chasing Deitrich" is a great read . . . mystery, intrigue, romance, all against the background of a rising National Socialist Party in pre-war WWII Germany . . . Mr. Mears is obviously a student of history, and through the lives and loves of his characters he catches both the tone and time of Nazi Germany in a near-perfect pitch.
A good story wrapped around pre-war Germany Nazi mania. Mike knows his history because all of the references to Nazi figures, places, streets, etc. are very accurate. If you are a WWII history buff, you will enjoy the background information as well as the story. Good start for a new author.
I didn't like this book, but I couldn't put it down. It is an ugly story about the ugly history of the Third Reich's rise and fall, along with lots of pain and suffering. Well written. I couldn't wait to learn the fate of the principal characters.
I have just finished reading a book, Chasing Deitrich, by a new author, Michael Mears, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The story about Hitler and pre-World War II was interesting, enlightening, sometimes frightening in the truth about the SS and Natzi methods that Hitler and his counterparts would bring upon the world in the 1930's. I found the book to be a love story, a history lesson and an adventure by characters who stood fast to the morals of life and liberty in the face of grave danger. I am looking forward to the next book.
